With respect to testing and using this shoulder pad, I usually carry a Husky 18 Inch Tool Bag w/ Shoulder Strap. It tends to weigh at least 40 pounds.I first tried the Domke 725-310 FA-031 U.S. Post Office Shoulder Pad. I returned it because it did not constrain the strap adequately. In many cases, the strap would slide off the protective cushion and dig into my shoulder, clavicle, or trapezius muscles. That made the shoulder pad less than useless.That doesn't happen with the Japan Hobby Tool shoulder pad. It's wide enough, long enough, and designed well enough to have the strap dig into the air cells and not slide off and dig into your body. To be completely clear about this product though, I do have to thoughtfully place the strap on my shoulder in a certain way to make it work. However, this doesn't require much effort, and the margin for error is large.There's an important final note about this comparative advantage. If you're carrying light loads, the two shoulder pads will probably function about the same. The more weight you're carrying, the more likely it is Domke's shoulder pad will fail to constrain the strap.Finally, this shoulder pad has better aesthetics. It just looks better.
